St. Paul RCMP traffic stop results in seizure of drugs and illegal firearm

A late traffic stop by the St. Paul RCMP on June 14, led to the seizure of significant quantities of drugs, cash, and an illegal firearm. The stop occurred just before midnight while officers were conducting proactive patrols in the town of St. Paul.  

During the stop, police discovered and seized 72.6 grams of methamphetamine, 1.1 grams of cocaine, 5.8 grams of fentanyl, $1,585 in cash, and a loaded sawed-off shotgun located beside the driver.  

Jessie Cardinal, 41 of St. Paul, faces ten charges, including possession for the purpose of trafficking and unauthorized possession of a restricted weapon. Cardinal was released on $5,000 cash bail and is scheduled at the Alberta Court of Justice in St. Paul on June 27.  

Owen Hunter, 34 of Saddle Lake First Nation, was also charged, facing five counts including unauthorized possession of a restricted weapon and obstruction of a peace officer. Hunter was released on conditions and is set to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in St. Paul on July 11.  

“St. Paul RCMP officers continue to work very hard to take illegal drugs and firearms off our streets,” says Cpl. Stephen Cunningham with the St. Paul RCMP Detachment. “This seizure will have an impact in local drug trafficking and organized crime within our communities.”
