Bonnyville Peace Officer clarifies proper reporting channels for residents

The town of Bonnyville’s Protective Services Department is working to clarify the process for residents when reporting various types of complaints. Peace Officer Wanda Tomm emphasizes the importance of understanding the correct channels for reporting issues to ensure timely and effective responses.

A recent statement from the town of Bonnyville urges residents to use the proper avenues for their complaints to get accurate results and information. Officer Tomm, who handles municipal bylaw infractions within the town limits, plays a vital role in efforts. She also enforces several provincial acts, including the Animal Protection Act, Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Act, and the Traffic Safety Act. However, her jurisdiction is strictly within town limits, and her responsibilities do not extend to criminal complaints, civil issues, or matters related to public works.

Confusion often arises because residents are unsure of where to direct their complaints, particularly when it comes to distinguishing between the roles of different enforcement agencies. While Officer Tomm operated in Bonnyville, similar issues outside town limits fall under the jurisdiction of the MD of Bonnyville’s Public Safety Department. The MD’s Ward Beat Officers handle a range of concerns including traffic enforcement, unsightly properties, and dog control, among others.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police primarily deal with criminal matters but can also enforce bylaws when other officers, like Tomm, are off duty. This overlap sometimes leads to confusion, especially in cases where criminal activity is linked to issues that also involve bylaw enforcement, such as drug activity on unsightly properties.

To assist residents in navigating these complexities, Tomm has outlined reporting options. Complaints can be filed at Town Hall, in person at the front counter, online via the Town’s app, or by phone. When filing a complaint, it’s important to provide detailed information, including the individuals involved, the nature of the incident, the location, timing, and the desired outcome, whether it be charges or warnings. These details help create a comprehensive record, facilitating a more effective investigation and resolution process.
