Man dies following police-involved incident in Cold Lake

A man has died after an encounter with police in Cold Lake on the evening of December 14.

According to a statement from the RCMP, officers responded to a 911 call about an attempted stabbing at a transit stop near 50th Street and 43rd Avenue around 8 p.m.

When police arrived, they encountered a man armed with an edged weapon. “Officers used their intervention options, including a firearm, to bring the subject into custody,” the RCMP reported in a release issued just after midnight on December 15.

The man was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. No officers or other civilians were harmed during the incident.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. “In compliance with legislative requirements, the Director of Law Enforcement was immediately notified resulting in the deployment of ASIRT to conduct an independent investigation. The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency and in so doing will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators,” the RCMP stated.

The RCMP emphasized their commitment to accountability and transparency, pledging full cooperation with the ASIRT investigation. “Events like this are difficult for everyone involve,” the statement concluded.
