The M.D. of Bonnyville council has approved an application for a $50,000 provincial grant to help fund water and sanitary feasibility study.
The proposal, presented by general manager of infrastructure services, Brian Bespalko, focuses on water and sanitary services for the airport and the Aurora Borealis subdivision. The grant, is part of the Northern and Regional Economic Development Program (NRED), aims to offset the study’s cost, reducing reliance on capital budget funds.
“If the grant is successful, less of the capital budget money budgeting would be used,” explained Bespalko. He also highlighted that the NRED program is designed to enhance economic conditions, leverage regional resources, and foster sustainable economic development.
Councillors discussed the broader implications of the study, including its potential to involve surrounding industrial subdivisions and future developments. It was assured that the study would evaluate the best and most feasible options for extending water and sanitary services to Aurora Borealis and the airport, with the possibility for future expansion.
Councillor Don Slipchuk highlighted the importance of forward thinking infrastructure planning. “I believe this is something we have to go forward with for the future development of our community,” said Slipchuk.
If the grant is not secured, the study will proceed using funds already allocated during the 2024 budget deliberations.
