City of Cold Lake approves grant to honour Indigenous artist Alex Janvier with cultural event

The City of Cold Lake has approved a $22,100 grant in support of the Alex Janvier Memorial Event, a cultural celebration honouring the life and legacy of the world-renowned Indigenous artist.

The event will take place at the Cold Lake Energy Centre from April 24 to May 5, with the grant covering facility fees.

The funds, allocated from Council Goodwill, will help bring to life an immersive experience celebrating Janvier’s accomplishments. A centerpiece of the event will be a 3D projection dome, showcasing a commemorative film that showcases Janvier’s journey from his upbringing to becoming an influential artist.

Cold Lake CAO Kevin Nagoya described the film as “a very emotional video” and “very well put together,” noting its potential to draw national attention as part of a larger tour.

Mayor Craig Copeland emphasized the significance of hosting the event at the Energy Centre- “The family looked at all their options and felt that the Energy Centre provided the biggest space and the openness, keeping people out of the elements and the weather.” The venue was chosen for its ability to accommodate the dome’s unique requirements.

The event will span 10 days, with two additional days reserved for setup and takedown. It is expected to attract both local and international visitors. Organizations are planning a range of complementary activities, including an opening ceremony, speeches by dignitaries, artist showcases, and receptions, to celebrate Janvier’s contributions to art and culture.

During the January 14 council meeting, Councillor Vicky Lefebvre raised questions about cost-sharing and the involvement of Cold Lake First Nations, given the project’s cultural importance. Nagoya clarified that while the city is providing support within its scope, the Janvier Gallery and family are seeking sponsorship opportunities to further fund the initiative.

Council expressed enthusiasm about the event’s potential impact- “They’ve been amazing to work with on this one, and I think it’s going to bring a lot of people to Cold Lake once it starts getting advertised,” said Copeland.
