Cold Lake authorities have taken further action against illegal encampments and social disorder, clearing a large campsite and issuing charges against repeat offenders.
On February 26, Cold Lake Municipal Enforcement, along side RCMP and city staff dismantled and cleaned a large encampment on public property in Cold Lake south.
Community Peace Officers, five RCMP officers, and city Bylaw officials oversaw the removal process, making sure it was a peaceful evacuation. During the cleanup efforts, contractors were there to help assist in the removal of 2,010 kilograms of waste.
Four individuals at the site were issued fines for causing a nuisance and trespassing while RCMP arrested one person on outstanding warrants, according to the city of Cold Lake.
“This is a persistent issue, but we are persistent people,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “It’s disheartening when people refuse help, but we will continue working to keep our community safe while offering assistance to those who need it. Our Peace Officers, RCMP, firefighters, and public works staff have all worked together on this issue, and they deserve a lot of credit.”
Cold Lake’s enforcement and emergency services continue to respond to illegal camps with Fire-Rescue handling 56 urban camping incidents in 2025 alone. The city works with Cold Lake and District FCSS and the Cold Lake John Howard Society to connect people in crisis with shelter and support.
