Cold Lake council reviews plans for expanding medical clinic

Council reviewed plans to expand the Cold Lake Medical Clinic to accommodate a growing number of doctors and enhance primary care services in the community.

Since April 2023, the clinic increased it physician count from two to five, with a sixth doctor expected soon. Deputy Mayor Chris Vining praised the progress saying, “We are achieving what we set out to do, which is bring more doctors to our community. It’s been an uphill battle, but we are making progress to ensure residents receive adequate and dedicated care.”

The clinic, operated by a Municipal Controlled Corporation formed earlier this year, has stabilized financially since the city took over its operations in April 2023. The shift allowed more targeted efforts to attract and retain physicians.

To support the growing number of doctors and improve patient care, the clinic requires expansion. Proposed plans include options such as doubling the building’s footprint, adding a second floor, or both, along with increasing parking spaces. These changes could allow the clinic to accommodate up to 15 doctors and create space for additional medical support services.

The estimated $4 million project would be funded primarily by the corporation and grants, with the council considering the option to contribute from city budgets if needed. The proposed expansion would provide more clinic rooms, larger waiting areas, and additional offices for doctors, addressing current space limitations.

The clinic’s Board of Directors and its doctors share a vision of increasing patient capacity and expanding primary care services. This expansion would also support cross-coverage for patients and enhance access to care.
